Distributed ledger technology (DLT) is a consensus (agreement of) of replicated, shared and synchronized digital data that is spread across multiple sites.

A key thing to note is that no central authority controls the network, with power being distributed across the network.

Although blockchain technology is considered a distributed ledger technology, it is not the only DLT – other DLTs exist such as Hashgraph and Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG).
